What does the ballast resistor do? The ballast resistor is located between the ignition switch and the positive battery cable. Its purpose is to control the level of voltage applied to the ballast resistor coil in order to prevent the coil from burning out or the battery being damaged when you start your engine. How do you know your ballast resistor needs to be replaced? Your engine cranks but then immediately dies when you move the key from the run position to the start position.
