About Ignition Coil Replacement
What does the ignition coil do? An ignition coil (also called a spark coil or boot) is an induction coil in an vehicleäóťs ignition system that transforms the battery's low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture. The number of coils in your engine depends on the number of spark plugs it has. When you turn the ignition, it not only sends power to the starter to turn the flywheel and start the pistons, crankshaft, etc. It also sends voltage to your ignition coil, then through the wires to your spark plugs. Your spark plugs take that energy to generate a spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. The spark plugs are constantly generating a spark as the vehicle is running and as the pistons compress when the fuel and air are mixed. If a coil is not functioning properly, it will cause the vehicle to run rough. How do you know you need your ignition coil(s) replaced? Engine light is on Engine is misfiring Vehicle is running rough Issues starting the vehicle Poor fuel economy How is the ignition coil replaced by a mobile mechanic? Battery power is disconnected Compression tested (if required) Ignition coils are tested to find faulty coil(s) Ignition coil(s) are removed Wells are inspected for oil or dirt New ignition coil(s) are installed Wires are re-installed (if required) Battery is connected and system testing How important is having your ignition coil replaced? Your ignition coil/boots, if faulty, will not function properly and vehicle can run poorly and misfire. When changing the ignition coil(s), if the spark plugs and wires have not been changed it's recommended to have them changed as well at the same time.
