    About Ballast Resistor Replacement

What does the ballast resistor do? The ballast resistor is located between the ignition switch and the positive battery cable. Its purpose is to control the level of voltage applied to the ballast resistor coil in order to prevent the coil from burning out or the battery being damaged when you start your engine. How do you know your ballast resistor needs to be replaced? Your engine cranks but then immediately dies when you move the key from the run position to the start position. How is the ballast resistor replaced by a mobile mechanic? The battery and battery tray are removed. The defective ballast resistor is disconnected and removed, and a new one is installed and connected. The battery tray and battery are reinstalled and the new resistor is tested. The vehicle is road tested to ensure proper operation. How important is is it to have your ballast resistor replaced? The ballast resistor is subject to a lot of heat which can cause wear and tear or even complete failure over time. Without a functioning ballast resistor, your vehicle will not be able to start.
