What is the AC compressor? The AC compressor is a component of a vehicle's AC system. It's purpose is to pump and pressurize refrigerant, passing it along to the evaporator. The AC compressor needs a clutch, bearing, and an electrical connector in order to run. The clutch is driven by a serpentine belt which engages the compressor when you turn on the AC. How do you know your AC compressor needs to be replaced? The AC system is not blowing cool air The AC is not working You notice a clicking sound from under the engine How is the AC compressor replaced by a mobile mechanic? The AC system is checked for pressure, and checked for power and ground at the compressor. All refrigerant is removed The compressor, receiver drier, orifice tube, and/or expansion valve are all removed. Any foreign materials are flushed from the system. New compressor, receiver drier, and orifice tubes are installed. The AC system is evacuated and recharged. The AC system is checked for leaks and proper operation. How important is it to have your AC compressor replaced? If the AC compressor is defective, your AC system will not blow cold air or any air at all. While this is not vital in the running your your vehicle, it can affect passenger comfort and can make it hard to clear foggy windows.
